CLEVELAND ART SOCIETY POPS UP TO MARK 140TH ANNIVERSARY

One of the country’s oldest art societies put on a special birthday show at Middlesbrough Town Hall.

The Cleveland Art Society (CAS) has been showing continuously since 1884, and marked its 140th anniversary with a weekend-long show in the historic Fire Station.

And Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke popped in to declare the ‘pop-up’ officially open.

The show followed a showcase at MIMA of the biggest collection of CAS artwork ever shown entitled ‘Working Lives’.

The pop-up event featured further locally produced examples of wall-based and table-top/plinth-based art for the public to enjoy.

Following the exhibition, CAS members headed over to the Centre Square modern art gallery for a slice of birthday cake and a cup of tea.

Artist and Cleveland Art Society secretary and archivist Alan Morley said: “2024 will go down in history as a big year for the Cleveland Art Society, with important support from MIMA and Middlesbrough Council.

“We’ve really enjoyed being able to show our work in the town centre, and look forward to further shows in the near future.”

Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke said: “Middlesbrough has a long and proud artistic heritage, and it’s great to see that history showcased in partnership with MIMA.

“This show is just a taster of the brilliant array of talent we have locally, and I look forward to seeing work by the Society’s many members at future shows.”
