Gran, 40, and ‘addict’ pal burgled Middlesbrough home

A pair of prolific offenders burgled a couple’s home as they slept before being caught out on CCTV.

Michael Wells, 39 and Danielle McGloughlin, 40, appeared at Teesside Crown Court on Monday to be sentenced for a raft of offences. The pair have nearly 170 convictions between them and have both struggled with addiction, the Middlesbrough court heard.

Teesside Crown Court heard during one incident on July 19, the pair raided a home on Outram Street, in Middlesbrough, stealing a handbag, bank card, and store gift cards. The owners, a husband and wife, awoke at 6am to find the TV had been moved and a handbag was missing.

n a later police interview, Wells made no comment to all questions asked about the footage and McGoughlin denied responsibility for the burglary. Wells, of Laycock Street, Middlesbrough, has 85 convictions for 177 offences and McGoughlin of Dalston Court, Ormesby, has 84 convictions for 198 offences.

The pair pleaded guilty to a string of charges including burglary and theft from a shop. In mitigation, the court heard McGoughlin admitted the offences at a plea and trial preparation hearing.

The court heard the burglary was committed on “impulse” and she has a problem with crack cocaine. It was claimed the grandmother is using her time in custody wisely working as a cleaner.

Representing Wells, barrister, Chris Morrison said he has had a “lifetime of addictions” and faced homelessness after his last stint in custody. Wells, was jailed for three years and three months while McGoughlin was sentenced to three years in prison.
